Who supports the people who are supporting others? Friends, family, neighbours and co-workers often offer care long before formal services become involved—and remain alongside people through difficult times, healing and change. These natural supports play an essential role in our communities, but they also need information, practical skills, healthy boundaries and support for their own well-being.

In Strengthening Networks of Care: Help for the Helpers, we explore four areas where natural supporters contribute to community safety and well-being and consider the information, skills, boundaries, guidance and care they need to help safely and sustainably. The article invites us to consider how communities and formal services can better support these helpers, strengthening the whole network of care.

We’re looking for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator to curate information and resources, support our communications platforms, and work with networks across Saskatchewan to increase awareness, knowledge and connections.

This part-time role offers 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling, for a term to March 31, 2027, with potential for extension.

November 25 to December 10 marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign that calls on individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness and take action to prevent violence against women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. The campaign begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and concludes on Human Rights Day.

The 16 Days provide an opportunity to reflect on how gender-based violence affects our communities and to consider the role we each play in creating safer, more equitable, and respectful relationships. Whether through learning, advocacy, community conversations, or supporting survivors, every action contributes to a future free from violence.

Ways to Participate During the 16 Days

• Invite a local speaker or organization to share information about gender-based violence and available supports.

• Support local women's, 2SLGBTQI+, and Indigenous organizations through fundraising, donations, or by raising awareness about their services.

• Host or attend a film screening, webinar, workshop, or community conversation focused on gender-based violence prevention.

• Share what you learn with friends, family, colleagues, classrooms, and community groups to help keep the conversation going.

• Use awareness resources and campaign materials to spark dialogue and promote healthy, respectful relationships, click here to learn more.

• Recognize key dates throughout the campaign, including wearing purple on November 25 and observing the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6.

Who do people turn to when something isn’t right—and how can we better support those they trust?

The people closest to us in everyday life are often the first to notice when we’re struggling. These natural supports are an important part of our communities’ networks of care.

Over the next few months, STOPS to Violence is bringing people together across Saskatchewan to explore how communities and service systems can better recognize and strengthen these relationships as part of violence prevention. Saskatchewan IPV Knowledge Exchange: Bridging Research, Community Practice, and Policy is an in-person knowledge mobilization event bringing together student researchers, community organizations, service providers, first responders, policy-makers, and other intimate partner violence (IPV) interest-holders.

The event is designed to create meaningful exchange across sectors by sharing emerging Saskatchewan-based research and exploring how evidence can inform prevention, services, community practice, policy and future research. The day will feature student oral research presentations, cross-sector discussion, networking, and opportunities to connect research with the people and organizations working directly in IPV-related fields.

This session of Mindfully Unwinding Whiteness (MUW) is designed as a sample of the 8-session guided conversation series to be offered Jan-Apr 2027. Both are intended for “white”/Euro-Canadians to protect Indigenous, Black, Asian, & other people “of colour” from microaggressions & expectations that they will educate & emotionally support white people in discussions about race. Also, as Ajay Parasram & Alex Khasnabish explain in Frequently Asked White Questions, “it would be unfair to expect white people to understand the politics of race when the very operation of racial politics in Canada has encouraged them to not think or talk about race lest they appear to be racist.”

Each session begins with an invitation to think about the land on which we gather & the peoples to whom it is home, followed by a mindfulness practice, safe & non-shaming discussion of race-related questions, real life scenario practice, & a mindful closing. In the sample session, facilitator Susan Gingell will explain the reasons for bringing together mindfulness & race-related topics.
